Each percussive 'CLACK' of the analog switch shifts our perspective, playing equally with camera and mic positioning, separating a/v pairs to create disjunctive relationships. When groups of switches are held down simultaneously, the signals merge to create colorful drifting and massive harmonic drones. From awkward silences to enticing fragmentation, the artist’s presence in the work both engages and repels the viewer, causing reflection on signals in their purest state, no effects, no edits, no way to erase mistakes and vulnerabilities.

Five arms are struggling to silence three telephones, an alarm clock and a timer without success. This rejection of communication and more generally of what connects us to time is a pretext for a new experimentation where you "hear what you see" and vice versa. These simple gestures, intended to break an unwanted process, are repeated in a quasi-schizophrenic way. The result is a choreographic and musical fight that will end with some effort.

sadescription After Empire
52mn   color & b/w   stereo   2010   Belgium
by Herman Asselberghs
A search for the alternative to an image of meaning, inspired by Antonio Negri’s and Michael Hardt’s "Empire". The insights from this politico-philosophical study on the contemporary world serve as a starting point for a reflection on positive forms of collective resistance and emancipatory representations in times of war. An adaptation that doesn’t aim to be an illustration of "Empire" but that reworks it in the light of the 9/11 heritage. "After Empire" considers a possible alternative for the iconic image that our collective memory has kept as the quintessential moment of recent history: the hijacked plane hitting the second tower. The alternative: the 15th of February 2003. On that day 30 million citizens across the planet marched against the unilateral decision by the American government to start a pre-emptive war against Iraq under the auspices of “the war on terrorism”. 2/15 was the greatest peace demonstration since the Vietnam war and probably the biggest protest march ever to take place. The war did happen, but this world day of resistance could very well mark the beginning of the 21st century. 2/15 instead of 9/11: a key date in the writing of a history of global contestation in the struggle between two superpowers: the United States against public opinion worldwide. Time is relentless. I'm worried, watching a puddle of water invisibly evaporate before my eyes, asking myself what will remain as I deal with the fallout of an ancestry that is slowly, mercilessly vanishing from this earth. I miss their bodily presence but that's not the only sorrow I feel. I grieve the loss of guided wisdoms, collective histories and the stories I was never told. Filmed over a period of two months in late 2008 as I helplessly watched my mother lose her battle with cancer, the single channel video. Capsule is a personal journey as well as an urgent inventory of the precious, final moments I wished to collect and suspend in time. Past blends with present as bedtime stories, children's toys and old photographs attempt to counter the distressing reality of syringes, bandages, get-well cards, and the last birthday we celebrated together as a family.

This film is a documentary tale about the state of childhood. A granfather, a father and a son are visiting the zoo. Three characters, three life stages, each having his own way of relating to childhood. The grandfather now in his early sixties remembers being a stranger as a child. The son, who is only a year and a half, is a child without knowing it. Unlike the grandfather, the father has no childhood memories. While searching for an origin, a horizon, his mind wanders back and forth between his father’s childhood and that of his son. It is the horizon of a common state of being he is looking for. But, among the animals, this quest soon turns itself into a tale of metamorphoses.

19mn   color   sil   2010   Belgium
by Aglaia Konrad
"Concrete & Samples I, II, III" is a series of 16mm films on sculptural architecture. What the buildings and site in all films have in common is the idea of "architecture as sculpture" and a very distinct use of concrete that seem to depart from the free form of the whole in a sculptural manner. In the absence of a traditional narrative, it is the space itself, that takes the role of the protagonist, while the camera proposes a narration through its travel and observation. The film Carrara, shows the marble quarry; within its 'sculpted' landscape, its temporary architecture and art-historical references form a more radical complement, to the two churches.

"Correspondances" (matches) is to be taken in every sense of the word. The film begins in the subways of various cities. An escalator takes you from Barcelona to Kyoto via Berlin. Images of the world sent by a press correspondent, anecdotes told in letters to friends, to relatives, from a correspondent. But they are also the coïncidences between the images and the sounds which, sliding over each other, seem to have affinities, to create links, to make sense. Sense yet always fugitive, already other before being really intelligible. Moving strata of images spread a part of the illusions that we share in our constant search for concordances, correlations and harmony.

Filming people without a camera. Compacted, contracted, molded, kneaded, accelerated, multiplied, chained, unchained, exploded, cut up, tortured, ... .. the "Slices of Life" grind up human, to life, to death and to love. A real "shopping of life" among all the shelves of supermarkets and corner stores of the everyday life staging. Film sequences, known or not, they are gone somewhere else to play a score that wasn't their. As in music, the tone of a film is expressed by the force of its own leitmotiv, by the almost hypnotic repetition of the simple measure of his purpose. This film is also a video installation.

"Heaven" is a monologue based on the theme of love, expressed through oneiric visionary suggestions. The archetypal idea of the double is played by an angelic presence splitted into two inclinations: one towards the tangible earthly world, the other that expands into the ascetical world. The encounter of the two essences leads to humanize the ethereal part, reacting to the extreme need of love, always suspended between heaven and hell, between sky and earth, between spirit and matter. The video is shot in full HD using the chromakey. The virtual sets are made of digital images and animations. Original dance, music and costumes.

"Je pense à toi, Mon Amour" is about complex passions artists experience with things (such as Cezanne's Ste. "Je pense à toi, Mon Amour" takes a look at the emotions viewers of art experience in viewing works of "art-things" forever viewed differently through the possession of that object through the psyche of the artist's creative processing.

"jhana and the rats of james olds": Between June 25th-Aug. 7th 2011 Stephanie Barber moved her studio into the Baltimore Museum of Art where she created a new video each day in a central gallery open to museum visitors. The goal of this project, entitled jhana and the rats of james olds or 31 days/31 videos, was to create a series of short, poetic videos in the playful and serious footprints of Oulipo games and daily meditations; creating one new video each day. The exhibit was both a constantly changing installation as well as a collaborative performance in which museum visitors were present as spectator and often creative partner. Each of these videos was created on one of the exhibition days. The resultant work can be screened as one large modular video or as individual pieces.

"Konversacio" is a virtual, multi-voice dialogue. 14 "mouths" joined together a digital pattern erupt onto the screen like a bad TV signal staging a performance of communication using the distinctive sounds of Esperanto. These mouths generate a free, heterogeneous game of sound and tone that is highly associable, yet disturbed by their own lingering desire for individuality, evident in both their verve of expression and in the attempt to overcome their own formal limits. A sonorous and dynamic film, at the same time consistent and erratic, alternating between synchronicity, calm and chaos.

This constructed image reflects our split up feelings, activated by our manipulated and organized contemporary views. "A violent wind generates the images. The atmosphere is air tight (and stale?). Silent bodies in front of the mirror. The ritual of small repetitive gestures opens the scene at the hairdressers. In an unpredictable and fragile present, the traces of a past world hussle themselves within carved faces. The storm quiets itself. A slow lethargy takes over everyday life: some people are eating, singing, playing ,some are walking in the sculpted out spaces. These lives are silenced by slowly sinking into the ordinary world, bodies swinging themselves at the gates of deep sleep. Then, one day, humanity wakes up and crosses over to the exterior side. Armed with wise gestures and precious postures, they watch with a smile an uneasy world falling apart. The event has already taken place. The last men are standing straight as trees, eternal survivors witnessing the disaster of the absent world within the world. From this consistant and unchangeable absence, these last men save the images." – Nikki Giannari

"Private Views" creates a parallel between two starkly different worlds: the wretchedness of the destitute and the conspicuous consumer lifestyle of the nouveaux rich. The video explores the themes of social inequalities, real estate speculation, and dispossession. It documents the decline of some North American cities and casts a critical eye on the emergence of wealthy new suburbs. These private residential enclaves are often gated and under surveillance. Their luxury homes, with their dubious architectural style, are the reflection of a world dominated by appearances, consumption, and social conformity.

During each of these re-enactments I recruited participants from the local community to help in the re-creation of the work, in this instance it was film in Quebec, City. Each piece can be seen as deterritorializing of the original scripts when the participants (actors) use the original material to re-create a new piece and through this process they also re-territorialize the work.

It becomes a strange choreography in the which the wrestler acts as an acrobat performing meaningless gestures. Staging this wrestler without any opponent reveals and stresses the enactment aspect of the struggle. Rosto is an experimental film about wrestling. It is inspired by French author Roland Barthes 's texts and concerns the wrestler's expressive emphasis when performing. "Only the image is involved in the game, and the spectator does not wish for the actual suffering of the contestant; he only enjoys the perfection of an iconography." Whether she crosses a hectic market place or a never-ending underground corridor, whether she gets lost among the crowd or wanders through the night-time desert of a city fast asleep, the director attempts to decipher the language of the city, to escape its chaos so as to better unveil its secret poetry. The images are taken from L'enfant sauvage ("The Wild Child"), François Truffaut's 1970 film, based on the true story, from the end of the 18th century, of an "uncivilised" boy being taken in by a doctor and studied as a specimen of difference. The images chosen for "The beautiful language" show the child being measured, taught and tested.

Filming people without a camera.

In almost all Latin American cultures the process of continuous disappearance of indigenous languages is a fact. It’s paradoxical to find versions of national anthems in these languages and dialects. This video is a challenge to the figure of colonialism which involves a seemingly harmless exercise in the translation in to their background language, by the way indigenous celebrates the disappearance of their own cultural expression. The video installation is composed by a zenithal projection of a funeral. To the extent that the soil covers the coffin, the volume of the sound decreases until it disappears. The sound is the national anthem Colombia translated into the Nasawaye language of the Nassa ethnic group.

"Transformance" is a video-event-work that activates and documents a five-month durational performance. Over this period of time, Nina Kurtela establishes a daily practice of visiting and witnessing the changes at the building site of the Uferstudios, Wedding, Berlin - the warehouse for the repair of public trams and buses becomes a dance institution. She is spectator to the making of an institution, an art institution, the making of the theatre stage. The camera acts as a witness to her performing/witnessing. The piece emerges as a case study of an individual subject's encounter with the radical transformations of social structures and operative models within the performing society. The artist is present at the birth of Berlin's new contemporary dance centre, an institution that will certainly come to play a part in shaping and organizing the dynamic of the city's dance community. The work emerges in the force field of a commitment to the daily execution of present-ness in relation to the specific context where this act takes place: the building site of the theatre. What unfolds is a 8-minute work with multi-faceted implications. The body is rendered a statue through the changes of time. The screen becomes the performing skin.

"VNTR" is a chimera between fine arts photography and genetics. A musician and a photographer merged sound design, images and DNA sequences to construct an audio-visual experience. Such experience recreates a hidden interaction between hidden patterns among personal aesthetics, and the never-ending human search for taxonomic classification methods.

"Scoffed faces" is a documentary grouping a serie of photographic portraits and filmed testimonies of actors. " We are only a support… we bring some thing, but we have to support the image that has a photographer, a director, a stage director " / actor Benjamin Mayet Once printed at the paper, the portraits were scratched to be taken on the picture the second time. The prejudice of the project was to work with actors to question them about their relation in the portrait, about the mask, about the autorepresentation, about the reincarnation through the roles.

3mn23   color   stereo   2011   USA
by Joy Whalen
An ominous beat resonates through this video work as a woman protests from inside a glass enclosure. The action is sparse, raw, and increasingly gritty the longer the woman remains captive. In the company of only her reflection, with all essential needs met, it can go on and on- a lonesome hustle, her laborious will. This is a work about downsides for the spent and wearied when realizing that base requirements are not at all enough.
